You will have to excuse the blatant bragging and "can you believe how smart this child is?"-ness of this post, but I definitely want to remember that she could do this. If for no other reason, I want to be able to remind her when she is taking a Geography test over North America in 6th grade! My friend, Lauren Robinson, brought this puzzle to Susannah when she was just a few months old and for the first year of Suzy's life, I just left it in the shrink-wrap. I would pull it out regularly and point to Oklahoma. Eventually, she wanted to open it and although it says for children 3 and over, she has loved every minute of playing with it and only tried to eat small New England states on one occasion. Ibby and Mia also benefited from the geographical review they got when putting it together with her! Daddy gets most of the credit for teaching her this trick since he does the puzzle with her almost nightly.
For some reason she is partial to California and will say, "Aunt Mana and Uncle Frank live here. There's a big bridge too!" She also calls Washington, "Dr. Washburn." He's our pediatrician.
Yes, that is proper placement of Wyoming! She can identify 30+ states and properly place them. We are still a little rusty on New England.
Susannah has definite favorites- Ohio, Tennessee, Kentucky, South Carolina (of course), California, Montana, Maine (it goes way up high!) and Oklahoma!
We affectionately refer to this puzzle as "The Oklahoma Puzzle" and it has been such a fun thing to watch Susannah learn! Soon we will move onto capitals!
